I'm new to this author but I can say with certainty that I will be back for more of her books.
Even though this is a follow up to her earlier novel Hard Rain, it is possible to pick up this book without reading the earlier ones. Ranna Abramson is trapped into returning to her hometown, South Africa, to save the love of her life, Alex Derksen. Two things are certain for Ranna if she chooses to return home, either the inside of a prison cell or the bottom of her own grave. The characters are easy to relate to and very interesting, a page-turner that keeps you coming back for more. Summary: We journey with Ranna as she travels from Mumbai back to her hometown. The excitement and mystery are contagious, drawing you in and making you hunger to know what happens next. If you don't mind skipping your bedtime, this is definitely the book to pick up. Rating: Nidderdale is a small, quiet village where a retired judge, Alexander "Sandy" Fraser is murdered. Jim Oldroyd and his team are called to investigate. An eye witness claims that the shooter was the local gardener cum handyman, Alan Green. Oldroyd continues searching for Green who has mysteriously disappeared and also for a motive to Sandy's murder. Both leave the reader astounded and puzzled.
Even though it was my first book in the series, I managed to connect to and appreciate the characters. Oldroyd is a fascinating main character, his detective skills are put to the test in this case as he encounters several roadblocks in his investigation. Several surprising twists and a number of possible suspects kept me guessing the end. Summary: When two murders without motive take place, Oldroyd is left to his own devices to solve the mysterious crimes. Tension rises as Oldroyd seek out the killers, more dead-ends are met when the motive for the murders is still unknown. Rating: Lost Girl was an easy read about a small-town murder of two teenage girls. The main character, Shelby Dan, is an investigative journalist who leaves her comfortable rich girl's life to pursue her career. One night when two teenage girls are found brutally murdered in their home, Shelby feels an association with the girls and is determined to find out who is behind the murders.
Jack, her cameraman, and best friend does everything within his ability to protect Shelby but she is determined to prove to everyone that she can do it on her own. She wants people to know that she is someone other than the pampered rich brat that people see her as. As she progresses in her investigation, she receives threatening notes telling her to stay away or she will be the next victim. She continues to dig further into her investigation not realizing that the closer she is to the truth, the more personal danger she faces. Summary: This YA contemporary is pretty well written with a good plot. An easy to read, fast-paced thriller. There is plenty of suspense and a few surprising twists and turns. The various leads and rising tension keeps you guessing who the killer is. Rating: The Fear is a pandemic based story, hugely inspired by the Covid-19. I was inspired to read this book as it would be fitting for the current time that we are in.
This book is on emotional horror and is centered around Jack and Ash who are quarantined together in a small apartment. Jack is afraid of the Cardigan man who turns out to be a fragment of her own imagination, who seems to be constantly haunting her thoughts. The descriptions in this book are expertly done and held my interest throughout, although at some points I did struggle to keep up with the plot of the book. As the story develops, Jack becomes more deranged, putting Ash in a difficult spot. She is left to choose between protecting herself or her lover. Summary: Befitting of our time, story of two gay women, harassed and mentally ill. Dealing with issues surrounding the pandemic. Rating: This was my first book in the series and I totally relished reading it.

Rating: The blond beauty in the story is Sigrid Schroder, she is a typical German wife who works as a stenographer and lives with her rather unpleasant mother in law, while her husband Kaspar servers on the German front.
But behind this façade is an entirely different Sigrid, a woman who dreams of her former lover, now lost in the chaos of the war. Her lover is a Jew. But Sigrid is not the only one with secrets. Sigrid goes about her daily routine, which in war-torn Berlin is a bleak and frightening experience, she pretends to be a good German who keeps to herself. But when a young woman who she barely knows comes to her for help, Sigrid steps out of herself and is forced to choose ..... Soon Sigrid is embroiled in a world she knew nothing about, and as her eyes open to the reality around her, the carefully constructed fortress of solitude she has built over the years begins to collapse. She must choose to act on what is right and what is wrong, and what falls somewhere in the shadows between the two. In this page-turning novel, David Gillham explores what happens to ordinary people thrust into extraordinary times, and how the choices they make can be the difference between life and death. A melancholy story, emotionally seductive with many tense moments, City of Women has many plots twist that keeps readers at the edge of their seats. Summary: A page-turner full of plot twists that keep readers guessing. Rating: This is my first read from Labuskes, I was truly intrigued by her style and how she draws the reader in and connects us with the characters in the story. A teenage girl, Eliza walks in the FBI field office and requests for Agent Lucy Throne. She then confesses to the murder of 12-year-old Noah. However Eliza's demeanor and the story don't quite add up, and then with a final word, Eliza stops talking. From the start, there are doubts as to the motive of the murder. In search of answers, Lucy goes to the crime scene in the small Idaho town of Knox Hollow. A small town with its own rules and a religious group that seems more like a cult. However, Lucy's questions only keep mounting as she's drawn deeper into the life of the victim. Lucy is besieged by doubts about Eliza's guilt and the plausibility that Eliza committed the crime alone. Who is she protecting? And why did Eliza come all the way to the FBI field office in Seattle instead of the local sheriff? I was totally baffled as the author mesmerized me in a town filled with secrets and lies. Her Final Words grabs your attention from the start and draws you into the chilling tale of murder and deception. Summary: I was enthralled by this book, I liked the author's style and ideas. An attention grabber which I found hard to put down. Rating: |
